			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://edoardoballerini.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Super-Toothpaste.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-669" title="Super-Toothpaste" src="http://edoardoballerini.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Super-Toothpaste-241x300.jpg" alt="" width="193" height="240" /></a>Last Saturday I saw a wonderful performance of &#8220;Measure for Measure.&#8221;  I took special note of a gentleman playing a certain part as he seemed especially refined, the kind of man I&#8217;d like to be when I go gray.  In the waiting area of a commercial casting office this morning, I saw him again.  He was still refined, head held high, but if he was there for the same thing I was &#8211; there were multiple parts &#8211; he was about to do something very, very silly.  It&#8217;s a fun spot, don&#8217;t get me wrong, but it&#8217;s silly.<span id="more-668"></span></p>
<p>(Before I go on, I should point out that while the spot isn&#8217;t for toothpaste, as the title of this musing might suggest, it may as well be.  Toothpaste, for some reason, is the default ridicule product for actors doing commercials.  I&#8217;m not sure why.  It means at very least you have terrific teeth.)</p>
<p>There was something jarring about seeing one so talented, and poised, waiting for a twentysomething with a clipboard to call his name so he can do a dog and pony show for 30 seconds.  But that&#8217;s the life we signed up for.  Even in the best of times, working in a wonderful production, saying some of the most beautiful words every written, we&#8217;re still looking for ways to keep the lights on.</p>
<p>I take lessons from all around me.  And it was a real treat to see somebody handle himself with such grace.  A gentleman among us.  Perhaps I shouldn&#8217;t wait for gray hair&#8230;</p>
