“Hawking Toothpaste, in Iambic Pentameter”

Last Saturday I saw a wonderful performance of “Measure for Measure.”  I took special note of a gentleman playing a certain part as he seemed especially refined, the kind of man I’d like to be when I go gray.  In the waiting area of a commercial casting office this morning, I saw him again.  He was still refined, head held high, but if he was there for the same thing I was – there were multiple parts – he was about to do something very, very silly.  It’s a fun spot, don’t get me wrong, but it’s silly.

(Before I go on, I should point out that while the spot isn’t for toothpaste, as the title of this musing might suggest, it may as well be.  Toothpaste, for some reason, is the default ridicule product for actors doing commercials.  I’m not sure why.  It means at very least you have terrific teeth.)

There was something jarring about seeing one so talented, and poised, waiting for a twentysomething with a clipboard to call his name so he can do a dog and pony show for 30 seconds.  But that’s the life we signed up for.  Even in the best of times, working in a wonderful production, saying some of the most beautiful words every written, we’re still looking for ways to keep the lights on.

I take lessons from all around me.  And it was a real treat to see somebody handle himself with such grace.  A gentleman among us.  Perhaps I shouldn’t wait for gray hair…

For the Mineralava Musings, this is Edoardo Ballerini, head held high.

There are some people who seem to be able to bring grace and dignity to… well, damn near anything, basically. It’s amazing, isn’t it? I’ve seen that too; I can just imagine what you saw.
